UAV Survey San Cristobal, Galapagos

Accurate surveys are critical to understanding low-lying, flood prone locations. Surprisingly, the Galápagos Islands—one of the most scientifically studied sites in the world—lacks such data. Without a consistent and unified vertical datum, neither tides nor storm surge can be accurately referenced to the land. Our team used UAVs (drones) and GPS/ GNSS site survey equipment to record aerial survey information of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno’s shoreline and ravines. This information will be essential for modeling past and future storm surge, sea-level rise, and tsunami scenarios as it relates to the island’s urban growth and coastal areas.

	Mission

The Environmental Modeling Lab (EMLab) is an applied research unit of the Weitzman School of Design’s McHarg Center, specializing in the analysis, simulation, and visualization of environmental systems.

The EMLab is positioned to work productively with both academic and private-sector partners in order to expand the role of sensing, simulation and modeling within contemporary landscape architecture practice, in addition to serving as a bridge between the design fields and the work of infrastructural and ecological engineering. This work takes the form of grant and competition collaborations, consultancy and landscape monitoring contracts, applied research projects, and education/coursework.

Karen M’Closkey is professor of landscape architecture at the University of Pennsylvania Weitzman School of Design and co-founder, with Keith VanDerSys, of PEG office of landscape + architecture. Their work focuses on the opportunities and limitations enabled by recent advancements in digital mapping and modeling and how they shape our understanding of landscapes and environments. Karen and Keith received a PEW Fellowship in the Arts, and Karen was the recipient of the 2012-2013 American Academy in Rome Prize in landscape architecture. They are guest editors of LA+ GEO (2020), LA+ Simulation (2016) and authors of Dynamic Patterns: Visualizing Landscapes in a Digital Age (2017). Karen is also co-editor of Design with Nature Now (2019) and author of Unearthed: the Landscapes of Hargreaves Associates (2013), which won the J.B. Jackson Book Prize awarded by The Foundation for Landscape Architecture.

Sean is co-founder of the research and design practice Proof Projects and a member of the Dredge Research Collaborative.︎︎︎Back

Co-Director

In addition to being an EMLab co-director, Keith VanDerSys is a founding partner of PEG office of landscape + architecture and a Senior Lecturer in Landscape Architecture. His research and teaching explore the applicability of new media and fabrication technologies to site applications. Recent research includes combining the computational capacities of geospatial analysis (ArcGIS Pro), computational fluid dynamics (Aquaveo SRH-2D/ CMS Flow), and parametric software (Rhino/ Grasshopper) to investigate new strategies of defining, analyzing, and monitoring landscapes.

Over a four-day period, our team collected approximately 20 hectares of high accuracy, high resolution survey data, including the tide gauge location and elevation.

Through our survey work, tidal elevations can now be measured relative to land. This will enable INOCAR to more accurately assess past and future tides and storms.

The height of San Cristóbal’s terrain is presently calculated through satellite imagery (top). When corrected with our survey data (bottom), the extent of possible future storm surge over land is much higher than if modeled with satellite elevation data.

Galapagos UAV Mapping

The archipelago’s tidal gauges lack a consistent and unified vertical datum. Without this benchmark, tides cannot be accurately referenced to the land, making past analysis and future projections impossible. The Oceanographic Institute of the Navy in Ecuador (INOCAR) requested our assistance in data collection and modeling. Using UAV technology and GNSS/GPS survey equipment, we modeled the shore of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristóbal, including the tidal gauge location. The georeferenced data will enable INOCAR to establish an accurate topo-bathy model and unified vertical datum among the islands’ tidal gauges. This information will assist with sea-level rise and tsunami modeling and assess the potential impacts on the town.
