Four Coasts

Four Coasts was a three-year initiative working with the USACE Engineering With Nature (EWN) program to develop multi-benefit coastal infrastructure projects. A collaboration between the EMLab and USACE EWN O-RISE Fellow Theresa Ruswick, Auburn University’s Landscape Infrastructure Design Lab (LIDL), the University of Virginia’s Natural Infrastructure Lab (NIL), AnchorQEA, and the Dredge Research Collaborative (DRC), the project team partnered with one EWN “Proving Ground” District on each coast of the lower 48 states—Gulf, Atlantic, Pacific, and Great Lakes—and identified opportunities for advancing natural infrastructure design.

The EMLab contributed to projects within all four districts, but primarily worked with the USACE Philadelphia District (NAP). Read the Philadelphia District Report on our Publications Page.

This work was honored with a 2026 ASLA / IFLA Global Impact Award in the Analysis & Planning category!
